Current Role: Residential, commercial, civic, and wetland restoration areas

Hamilton Air Force Base, originally known as Hamilton Army Air Field, is a decommissioned military installation located in Novato, Marin County, California. Established in the early 1930s, it served as a major U.S. air defense and training base through World War II and the Cold War. Today, the site is a designated historic district and redeveloped mixed-use community known for its preserved Spanish Eclectic architecture and environmental restoration efforts.

Construction began in 1932 as part of a nationwide air-defense expansion and was completed by 1935. The base hosted bomber and pursuit (fighter) squadrons of the 1st Wing of the Army Air Corps. During World War II, Hamilton was a key staging area for Pacific-bound air units and home to the Fourth Air Force's regional command. In 1951, it became Hamilton Air Force Base, supporting jet fighter operations during the Cold War until its closure in 1974.

Hamilton Field's design was notable for its Spanish Eclectic and Mission Revival style, integrating Mediterranean motifs, stucco exteriors, and red-tile roofs. The base was planned as a cohesive community with landscaped streets, officers' housing, and amenities such as a hospital, theater, and pool. This approach reflected 1920s military design innovations emphasizing harmony with regional climate and topography.

After closure, portions of the base were transferred among the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and the City of Novato. The area has since been redeveloped into residential neighborhoods, business parks (such as Hamilton Landing), and community facilities including the Hamilton Field History Museum. Major environmental work, the Hamilton Wetland Restoration Project, is converting the former runway area into tidal wetlands that reconnect with San Pablo Bay.
