Perrin Air Force Base, Texas

Perrin Field is a former United States military airfield located near Sherman and Denison in Grayson County, Texas. It played a major role as a training base for pilots during and after World War II and was later known as Perrin Air Force Base. Today, the site operates as North Texas Regional Airport/Perrin Field.

Established in 1941 as a U.S. Army Air Forces training installation, Perrin Field trained thousands of pilots for combat during World War II. The base included runways, hangars, and extensive support facilities, reflecting the rapid military expansion that characterized the early 1940s. After the war, it was briefly deactivated before reopening during the Cold War.

Reactivated in 1948 under the newly formed U.S. Air Force, Perrin became a major pilot training center for jet aircraft. The base hosted advanced interceptor and fighter training programs and supported regional air defense efforts. At its peak, it was one of North Texas's largest employers, with thousands of service members and civilians stationed there.

In 1971, Perrin Air Force Base was closed as part of a nationwide consolidation of Air Force installations. The property was transferred to Grayson County, which redeveloped it as a public airport and business hub. The airfield's facilities were adapted for civilian aviation, education, and industrial use.

Now operating as North Texas Regional Airport/Perrin Field, the site preserves its aviation heritage while supporting commercial and general aviation activities. Some of the original military structures remain in use, and local museums and memorials commemorate the base's historic contributions to U.S. air power.
