Why these sites were built

South Florida's distinct Cold War deployment

Army Nike Hercules units arrived during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Four permanent South Florida batteries were planned in 1964 and completed by June 1965. Unlike many Nike installations elsewhere, their missile shelters were built above ground because of the high water table. The Florida batteries closed in 1979. National Park Service research on HM-69 documents this sequence.

The combined HM-66/69 record preserves the site's two service designations in the existing Nike site index. HM-69's former launch area is preserved within Everglades National Park; check the National Park Service for current visitor information.
