Historic Role: Major training base for infantry units throughout 20th century.

Current Role: Conservation Land

Fort Ord was a major United States Army installation located on the Monterey Bay coast in Monterey County, California. Active from 1917 to 1994, it trained hundreds of thousands of soldiers and played a key role in 20th-century U.S. military history. Today, much of the former base is protected as public lands and redeveloped for civilian use. Originally known as the Gigling Reservation, Fort Ord was renamed in 1940 for Union General Edward Otho Cresap Ord. It became one of the largest training centers for infantry soldiers during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The installation housed the U.S. Army's 7th Infantry Division and supported basic and advanced combat training until its closure. After deactivation in 1994, Fort Ord underwent extensive environmental cleanup to address munitions and contamination. Portions of the land were transferred to educational, residential, and conservation purposes. California State University, Monterey Bay was established on part of the site, opening in 1995 as a central feature of the redevelopment effort. In 2012, the Bureau of Land Management designated more than 14,000 acres as the Fort Ord National Monument, preserving grasslands, maritime chaparral, and coastal dunes. The area offers extensive trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, balancing habitat restoration with outdoor recreation.
