Memphis Army Airfield, Memphis Tennessee

Memphis Army Airfield was a United States Army Air Forces training base located near Memphis, Tennessee, during World War II. It played a key role in the Army Air Forces' pilot training and support operations before its postwar transition to naval and civilian use.

Memphis Army Airfield was constructed in 1942 as part of the rapid wartime expansion of U.S. air training facilities. The flat terrain of western Tennessee and its proximity to major rail lines made the area ideal for large-scale airfield operations. The base supported advanced flight and technical training programs critical to preparing aircrews for overseas deployment.

At its peak, the airfield hosted thousands of military personnel and aircraft. It offered instruction in multi-engine flight, navigation, and aircraft maintenance. In addition to pilot training, the base conducted ground support and logistics programs that sustained the Army Air Forces' global operations throughout the war.

After World War II, control of the facility transferred to the U.S. Navy. Renamed Naval Air Station Memphis, it shifted focus to naval aviation training and administrative support. In later decades, it was reorganized as Naval Support Activity Mid-South, continuing to serve as a major naval personnel and logistics hub for the southeastern United States.

The former Memphis Army Airfield site remains an active military installation, with many original wartime structures repurposed for naval use.
