Millington Air Force Base - part of Naval Support Activity Mid-South today, Tennessee

Millington Air Force Base was a former United States Air Force installation located in Millington, Tennessee, northeast of Memphis. It served as a major training and personnel center during much of the 20th century. After its closure as an Air Force facility, the site transitioned to Navy use and now houses Naval Support Activity Mid-South.

The base was constructed in 1942 as Millington Army Air Field, serving as a pilot training center during World War II. After the war, it became known as the Naval Air Technical Training Center and was later transferred to the U.S. Air Force, evolving into Millington Air Force Base. The facility played an essential role in Air Force technical and support training throughout the Cold War era.

In 1993, as part of post-Cold War defense realignments and the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, Air Force operations ceased at Millington. The U.S. Navy assumed control, converting the site into Naval Support Activity Mid-South, which became a hub for Navy personnel management functions.

Today, the former base includes both military and civilian facilities. Naval Support Activity Mid-South remains one of the Navy's largest human resource centers, employing thousands of service members and civilians. The adjoining Millington Regional Jetport (formerly Millington Municipal Airport) occupies the former airfield, serving both military and public aviation needs.
