Tri-City Army Air Field, Blountville Tennessee

Tri-City Army Airfield was a World War II-era military air base located near Blountville, Tennessee, in Sullivan County. Established by the U.S. Army Air Forces, it served as a regional training and support facility before being converted to civilian use. The site evolved into today's Tri-Cities Regional Airport, an important aviation hub for northeastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia.

Constructed during 1943, Tri-City Army Airfield supported Army Air Forces training and logistics needs for the Appalachian region. Its runways, hangars, and support buildings reflected the standardized designs used across wartime auxiliary fields. The base contributed to regional economic growth through employment and military investment.

After the war ended in 1945, the military deactivated the installation. Local governments and civic leaders worked with federal authorities to repurpose the property for civilian aviation. By 1946, the facility reopened as Tri-Cities Regional Airport, jointly serving Bristol, Kingsport, and Johnson City.
