Walla Walla Army Air Field, Washington

Walla Walla Army Air Field was a World War II-era bomber training base located near Walla Walla, Washington. Established in 1942, it played a vital role in preparing U.S. Army Air Forces crews, especially B-17 and B-24 bomber units, for combat in the European and Pacific theaters.

Constructed rapidly in early 1942, the field was part of a nationwide expansion of air facilities to meet wartime training needs. It fell under the jurisdiction of the Second Air Force, which specialized in heavy bomber training. The base offered extensive runways, maintenance hangars, and gunnery ranges to accommodate the large four-engine aircraft and their crews.

Bomber groups trained at Walla Walla included the 91st, 92nd, 96th, and 398th Bomb Groups, among others, before deployment overseas. Aircrews underwent instruction in formation flying, bombing accuracy, and defensive tactics. The field's varied weather and terrain provided realistic challenges that mirrored operational conditions in combat zones.

By serving as an advanced training hub for thousands of airmen, Walla Walla Army Air Field contributed significantly to the Allied strategic bombing campaigns. The experience gained there helped shape the proficiency of U.S. bomber forces in Europe and the Pacific during the height of World War II.

Following the war's end in 1945, the base was deactivated and transferred to civilian control. Its infrastructure was repurposed to create the Walla Walla Regional Airport, which still operates today.
