Blackland Army Air Field, Waco Texas

Blackland Army Air Field was a United States Army Air Forces installation near Waco, Texas, active during World War II. It served as a major training base for bomber pilots and crews, contributing significantly to the wartime air training program before its postwar conversion to civilian and educational uses.

Commissioned in 1942, Blackland Army Air Field was part of the Army Air Forces Central Flying Training Command. It trained pilots for aircraft such as the B-25 Mitchell bomber and hosted thousands of cadets. Its mission supported large-scale mobilization and aircraft production efforts essential to U.S. operations in both European and Pacific theaters.

The base included multiple runways, hangars, barracks, classrooms, and maintenance shops. It also operated auxiliary airfields in the surrounding area to handle training traffic. Military and civilian instructors worked side by side, emphasizing navigation, formation flying, and advanced instrument techniques.

After World War II, the airfield was deactivated and turned over to the city of Waco. It became Waco Municipal Airport before evolving into the campus of Texas State Technical College. While few original military structures remain, remnants of the runways and layout still reflect its wartime origins.
