Dalhart Army Air Base, Texas

Dalhart Army Air Base was a World War II-era military installation located near Dalhart, Texas, USA. Established as part of the United States Army Air Forces training network, it served as a vital site for bomber and glider pilot preparation during the war. The base contributed to the regional wartime economy and aviation development in the Texas Panhandle.

Built in 1942, Dalhart Army Air Base was one of numerous airfields rapidly constructed across the United States to meet wartime training demands. The site featured multiple runways, hangars, barracks, and maintenance facilities designed to accommodate heavy bomber units and troop carrier operations. Its isolated location provided ideal flying conditions and safety for large-scale training.

The base trained crews for the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator bombers, as well as glider pilots preparing for airborne operations in Europe. Specialized schools taught navigation, gunnery, and aircraft maintenance. Thousands of personnel cycled through the facility, contributing to the Allied air campaign through the skills they developed there.

Following the Allied victory in 1945, Dalhart Army Air Base was decommissioned and its property transferred to civilian control. Portions of the site evolved into Dalhart Municipal Airport, while other sections reverted to agricultural use.
