Site Role: IFC
A typical Nike air defense site consisted of two separate parcels of land. One area was known as the Integrated Fire Control (IFC) Area. This site contained the Nike system's ground-based radar and computer systems designed to detect and track hostile aircraft, and to guide the missiles to their targets.

The second parcel of land was known as the Launcher Area. At the launcher area, Nike missiles were stored horizontally within heavily constructed underground missile magazines. A large, missile elevator brought the Nikes to the surface of the site where they would be pushed across twin steel rails to one of four satellite launchers.

Missile Type: Ajax
The Nike Ajax was the first in the Army's family of guided missiles, and the world's first operational, guided, surface-to-air missile system. Nike Ajax had a burnout speed of Mach 2.3, a range of 25-30 miles, and a ceiling of 65,000 feet.
Designed to carry either nuclear and/or high-explosive warheads, the Nike Hercules missile could attack supersonic aircraft operating at altitudes in excess of 150,000 feet and at a range of more than 87 miles.

Nike Site D-14 occupied separate launch and Integrated Fire Control areas in the southern and southwestern portion of Selfridge Air Force Base, now Selfridge Air National Guard Base, in Harrison Township near Mount Clemens, Macomb County, Michigan. Both areas remain within the restricted military installation. D-14 operated beside the longer-lived D-16 battery and shared administrative and support functions with it, making the Selfridge Nike complex more concentrated than a typical suburban firing battery.

At Selfridge, bombers and missiles occupied the same defensive landscape. Air Force interceptors stood ready on the flight line while Army radar crews watched the approaches to Detroit and Nike missiles waited in underground magazines near the southern edge of the base. D-14 was the Ajax-only half of this layered defense. It opened in 1955, held twenty Nike Ajax missiles in two buried magazines, and remained operational until February 1963.

D-14 never received Nike Hercules. Its neighboring Selfridge battery, D-16, was converted and continued until 1971, while the older D-14 system disappeared during the early-1960s consolidation of the Detroit defenses. That contrast gives D-14 a distinct history. It represents the first generation of permanent continental missile defense: rapidly built, intensively manned, and superseded after only eight years as the Army concentrated resources in fewer, more capable Hercules batteries.

Why Selfridge and Detroit Mattered

Detroit was one of the most important industrial targets in the United States. Automobile factories, steel mills, chemical plants, transportation links, military production, and the skilled workforce that had created the World War II "Arsenal of Democracy" were concentrated across southeastern Michigan. Cold War planners expected that Soviet long-range bombers would attack this industrial complex in a major war.

Selfridge added another reason to defend the northeastern approach. The base was itself an air-defense center, home to fighter-interceptor activity, Air Force radar, and Army command functions. The 28th Artillery Group established its headquarters in the southwestern part of Selfridge in 1952. It first administered antiaircraft-gun defenses and then assumed responsibility for combat-ready Nike missile units protecting the Detroit-Cleveland region.

By the mid-1950s, D-14 and D-16 placed Army missile batteries on the same installation from which Air Force fighters and radar crews supported continental air defense. Later, the Detroit Army Air Defense Command Post, designated D-15DC, operated at Selfridge with Missile Master and then Missile Mentor equipment. The command post coordinated the firing batteries around Detroit and exchanged information with the wider Air Force and NORAD warning network. D-14 therefore belonged to a layered system: early warning and target information, regional command and assignment, local Nike radar control, surface-to-air missiles, and manned interceptors.

Construction and Organization

The Army inventory begins D-14's active service in 1955. National Archives holdings include 1958 as-built drawings for the D-14 and D-16 facilities at Selfridge, evidence of the substantial engineering record created after the batteries were completed. The launch, fire-control, and support areas were placed in a separate, secured military complex within the larger air base.

Archival documentation describes the Army air-defense district in the southwestern part of Selfridge as self-contained and isolated from the rest of the base for functional and security reasons. Prefabricated buildings numbered 1582, 1583, and 1584 were erected in 1955 north of the southwestern Nike IFC complex. They supported radar and later Nike personnel and were connected to a concrete-block support building. The broader Nike headquarters and command complex occupied buildings numbered 1515 through 1537.

D-14 and D-16 are sometimes described as sharing an IFC area. The surviving source record is more complicated. Some secondary property histories use the combined label D-14C/D-16C, while the supplied national KMZ and current Nike site directories identify distinct D-14 and D-16 IFC locations. Contemporary site notes specifically say the two batteries shared an administrative area. The best-supported interpretation is that the Selfridge batteries shared administration and some support infrastructure within a tightly grouped complex, while each firing battery retained its own operational control identification.

The Ajax Launch Area

D-14's launcher area was built around two underground B-type missile magazines. Each was a reinforced-concrete chamber in which Ajax missiles were stored horizontally on handling rails. An elevator platform raised missiles to the surface. Crews then pushed them along rails to the firing positions, erected them, connected the required systems, and prepared them for engagement.

Nike Ajax used a solid-propellant booster and a liquid-fueled sustainer. The launch area therefore needed missile assembly and checkout space, fuel and oxidizer handling facilities, generators, hydraulic equipment, maintenance shops, crew-ready space, security, and communications to the IFC. Fuel and oxidizer work demanded strict procedures because the sustainer's chemicals were hazardous. Alert readiness depended as much on disciplined maintenance and testing as on the missiles themselves.

Configuration and Decoded Meaning

The Army configuration notation for D-14 is "Nike 2B/20A/8L-A." Its elements mean:

2B: two B-type underground missile magazines. B-type magazines could be modified for the larger Hercules system, but that capability does not mean D-14 was converted.

20A: twenty Nike Ajax missiles in the documented battery configuration.

8L-A: eight Ajax launchers. These were Ajax-only firing positions rather than the universal launchers installed at batteries converted to Hercules.

The notation describes two shared magazines, twenty missiles, and eight surface launchers. It does not mean that D-14 had twenty individual silos or eight underground cells. The missiles were stored together in the magazines, raised by elevator, and distributed to the launchers on the surface.

The B-type designation is especially easy to misread. It identified a magazine design that could be adapted for Hercules with modifications, particularly to missile handling and elevator equipment. D-14's records retain the Ajax-only missile allowance and Ajax-launcher suffix, and the Army's list of Detroit Hercules conversions does not include D-14. Neighboring D-16 received that investment instead.

The Integrated Fire Control Area

The IFC area was the technical center of the battery. An acquisition radar searched the assigned sector and presented possible targets to the crew. After a target was selected, the target-tracking radar followed the aircraft while a separate missile-tracking radar followed the launched Nike. Analog computing equipment continuously compared the two tracks and calculated steering commands. The missile received those commands by radio until the system determined that it had reached the proper intercept point.

This command-guidance arrangement explains why the IFC and launch areas were separated. The missile-tracking radar needed a clean view of the Nike after it rose from the launcher, while physical separation reduced the chance that one attack or accident would disable both parts of the battery. Secure land-line communications tied the areas together, and both depended on reliable power and trained electronics personnel.

The Selfridge setting added coordination opportunities but also operational complexity. D-14's radars worked near Air Force radar and an active flight line. Regional target assignments had to prevent neighboring batteries from engaging the same target unnecessarily, and the Nike crews had to distinguish friendly aircraft and training traffic from a genuine threat. The later Missile Master system at Selfridge automated much of the regional coordination, but the final acquisition, tracking, launch, guidance, and burst decisions remained functions of the assigned firing battery.

Personnel and Readiness

The Selfridge Military Air Museum identifies D-14 as staffed by U.S. Army and Michigan Army National Guard personnel. Broader histories associate the Selfridge Nike facilities with the 3rd Battalion, 517th Artillery and place the 28th Artillery Group headquarters on the base.

Readiness required crews in two operational areas and in the shared support complex. Radar operators, fire-control technicians, computer personnel, missile crewmen, power-generation specialists, mechanics, communications personnel, security troops, and administrative staff all contributed to the alert mission. Training could run the complete engagement sequence without firing. Actual qualification launches took place at designated firing ranges, not over metropolitan Detroit.

Life at the battery mixed extraordinary responsibility with repetitive routine. Crews inspected missiles and electrical circuits, exercised magazine elevators, maintained radar calibration, tested communications, and rehearsed target engagements. They also lived and worked within one of the busiest joint air-defense installations in the region. Official Selfridge photographs from the mid-1950s show Army personnel with Nike equipment and Ajax missiles on the flight line, with base operations buildings, hangars, and C-46 transports in the background. The images are not individually identified as D-14 rather than D-16, but they document the environment in which the Selfridge batteries operated.

Why D-14 Remained Ajax

Between 1958 and 1961, the Army converted six Detroit batteries to Nike Hercules: D-06, D-16, D-26, D-58, D-61, and D-87. D-14 was not among them. Hercules offered greater range, altitude, speed, and destructive radius, and its solid-fueled sustainer simplified some maintenance compared with Ajax. Concentrating the new system at selected batteries allowed the Army to defend a wider area with fewer sites.

At Selfridge, the choice produced an unusually clear division. D-16 received Hercules and universal launchers, while D-14 retained twenty Ajax missiles and eight Ajax-only launchers. The two batteries could coexist during the transition, but once the regional network had enough Hercules coverage, the older D-14 battery offered less capability at a continuing personnel and maintenance cost.

The February 1963 closure also came during the broader transfer and consolidation of Detroit Nike operations. Michigan Army National Guard units assumed many alert missions during the 1960s, and surviving batteries increasingly centered on Hercules. D-14's retirement was therefore not the abandonment of Selfridge air defense. It was the removal of the redundant Ajax half while D-16, the regional command post, Air Force radar, and interceptor forces continued the mission.

Role in the Wider Military Network

D-14's most important historical feature is its location inside the command center of the Detroit defense. Most Nike batteries were dispersed around a city and connected to a headquarters elsewhere. At Selfridge, the firing batteries operated close to the 28th Artillery Group, Air Force warning radar, the later D-15DC command post, and combat aircraft on alert.

That concentration made Selfridge both a defended asset and a control hub. D-14 could protect the base, the Lake St. Clair approach, and the northeastern side of metropolitan Detroit while regional headquarters coordinated batteries around the entire industrial area. Its Ajax missiles were the last line of defense after detection, identification, command assignment, and any fighter-interceptor attempt.

D-14 defended against aircraft, not intercontinental ballistic missiles. As the strategic threat shifted toward ICBMs and as improved Soviet aircraft reduced warning time, the Nike network's original mission became less central. The system remained useful against bombers, but it could not provide the comprehensive missile shield that its name sometimes suggests to modern readers.

Closure and Reuse

The Army deactivated D-14 in February 1963. The missile inventory and launchers were removed, and later Selfridge documentation states that the subsurface components of the Nike batteries were filled. The property did not leave federal control or become a public redevelopment site. Instead, the D-14 areas reverted to Selfridge and were absorbed into later military support uses.

The national Army inventory later characterized the control area as partially intact and associated with Army engineering-support buildings. It classified the launcher area as obliterated and associated it with the Army's Tank-Automotive Command. Later site notes reported equipment storage at the former IFC and Michigan Army National Guard vehicle storage at the former launcher area. A 1999 observer was told that D-14/D-16 structures were expected to be demolished, illustrating how quickly the physical evidence was changing.

Historic American Engineering Record documentation from 1996 preserved information on nearby prefabricated buildings 1582 through 1584. Built in 1955 for radar and later Nike personnel, they had subsequently housed the base K-9 Corps and the Rod and Gun Club before becoming vacant. That record is valuable even if individual buildings have since disappeared because it documents the support landscape surrounding the missile and radar operations.

Current Condition

The former D-14 properties remain inside active Selfridge Air National Guard Base and are not public historical sites. Selfridge continues as a major joint installation used by Air National Guard, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, reserve, and federal law-enforcement organizations. Public sources do not establish the 2026 survival of each D-14 foundation or support building, and current Nike directory pages label the detailed site status unknown.

The safest present-condition assessment is therefore layered. The magazines were filled and the missile-handling equipment removed. Military reuse and later demolition erased the launch area's original arrangement, although the land continued in vehicle or equipment-support functions. The IFC and adjacent support area retained some Cold War buildings into the late twentieth century, but the survival of individual D-14 structures requires controlled-access field verification.

Visitors cannot tour the former battery as they can the D-06 landscape in River Bends Park. The accessible interpretive destination is the Selfridge Military Air Museum, which displays restored Nike Ajax and Nike Hercules missiles and preserves photographs and artifacts from the base's air-defense mission. Because the museum is located on the active installation, it requires advance access approval under its current visitor procedures.
